1968 vs. 2013: The Romeo and Juliet Movie Battle Royale

Wait, they made movies of Romeo and Juliet, the play? Multiple movies? Even one with Leonardo DiCaprio? There’s one that was made in Bollywood, India too?

Yes indeed.

Though there are many films of Romeo and Juliet to pick and choose, I’ll specifically be comparing the differences and similarities between the 1968 film and the 2013 adaptation, focusing on wardrobe, lighting, and use of music throughout each film.

So without further ado, let’s begin!


The wardrobes for each film is dramatically different

Wardrobe, as many things, really effects the overall mood/tone of the play. In the 1968 version, they use very “loud” and colourful clothing that really captures the fanciness and theatrical flair of Romeo and Juliet. The 2013 adaptation also holds this colourful wardrobe, but is much less loud in comparison. Here are some images of Juliet’s costume to compare.



The 1968 has very bright and attracting colours. Somewhat over dramatized like most wardrobes in other plays.


The 2013 uses colours that “pop” less; not so much an eyesore.[2]

It’s evident to see by first glance how both movies are similar in their style of clothing. While the 1968 version had bright colours, big dresses, and a use of silly hats, the characters looked similar to human chess pieces. On the other hand 2013 takes a more subtle route, having an overall similar look though much more toned down.


Wardrobe isn’t the only thing to consider, the use of lighting differs greatly between films

Both films differ in lighting, and similar to wardrobe greatly effect the mood of the play.


In the earlier 1968 version the lighting is less serious and more stage-like.[3]

The 2013 uses dark lighting and is much more serious.[4]

Indeed, the 1968 version offers a very “vintage” kind of lighting which works greatly to set the mood in the film. The 2013 on the other hand, offers very sleek and dramatic lighting.


Finally, the use of music is something to consider

Like pictures, music can say a thousand words. So the question must be begged, what is the music in each film saying?

To me, the 1968 adaption describes and older kind of drama, and orchestral and loud one. Again, very theatrical. The 2013 in comparison not using music really added a serious mood to certain parts of the film. These clips from of the kissing scenes really displays this contrast.

Like I said, loud theatrical drama from the 1968 clip and serious, emotional drama from the 2013 clip.

As you can see, the wardrobe, lighting, and use of music all have their lasting impact of each other films, giving similarities and differences between each, with their own lasting flavour. While the 1968 adaptation of the play offers and older, more classical and theatrical feeling it delivers its own way to interpret Romeo and Juliet’s love. Of course the 2013 offers the same intimate relationship its delivers a much more serious and dramatic feel. Both have their pros and cons, and both are fine films, but ultimately it’s up to you to decide what film rises out on top.

Give from the Heart, not the Store(Re-craft)

Malls are over-crowded, roads are filled to the brim, your friends and family are acting especially suspicious, and you haven’t even begun to think of what to give. The gift giving season can be a rough time, filled with stresses and strains to make mind race. But why do some feel this way? Why are days such as Christmas, Valentine’s day, or even Father’s or Mother’s day filled with so much tension? There can be many benefits to giving gifts and tokens of appreciation but there are definitely negative impacts when it comes to gift giving. Self-induced pressure is can be a real inner-peace killer, and contributes to negative side of the overall positive gift sharing holidays.

Holidays are fun! But self caused stress isn’t. It is always great to enjoy the holidays in whatever way you choose, be it a trip to the movie theater, a road trip, or time with family. However when comes to finding the perfect gift, people can overwork themselves. When it comes to parents in the United States, many felt as though it was their duty to make it as enjoyable as possible for their family[1], adding stress to what should be simple and fun time off. Parents aren’t the only ones effected either, in general, people during the holiday season are reported to have a 38% increase in stress during the holiday season, while only 8% feel a decrease. Out of this, approximately 48% of all people feel as though they cannot let themselves relax during the holiday season. Many feel stress during the holiday season because a lack of time, staying on a diet, pressure of giving gifts, and an assortment of other factors[1]. People induce their own stress during what should be a time of joy and celebration!

Self-induced stress can be a real stinker on the holiday season, adding unnecessary tension to what should be a time of relaxation and celebration. Some feel as though it’s their obligation to make things as “prefect” as they can, others may feel like they can’t find the one gift to express their gratitude towards another, and some simply don’t care at all. Holidays are something to be happy about, not something to pile on the stress-train, why isn’t the simple works of “I love you.” enough? Remember to take time to smell the roses, and to give as you please when it means something special, to both you and those you care for.

1. Is there some aspect of the topic, results, conclusions, or concepts for which you gained a deeper understanding of through the blog discussion? Was there some aspect of the posts you explored that you had not thought of or that you ‘learned’ about from the discussion? In other words, what aspect of the post was clarified or illuminated as a result of the blog discussion?

I don’t believe that there was any point in which I “clarified” any topic in my blogger of the week. I gained many new perspectives while researching by simply talking to people. With this blog I learned more about myself more than anything. I always kind of new economy was a hot mess and the points I talked about I already knew in advance.

2. Were there aspects of the discussions that led to more confusion for you compared to when you read the blog post alone? Was the confusion resolved through discussion? Please explain (make specific reference to the blogs involved ­ direct quotations may be appropriate ­ reference the author).

No not really, when I did my presentation and the class I was kind of confused. Whether people simply not getting what I was saying or  I was just presenting poorly or they all disagreed and were being polite by not saying anything I wasn’t sure of.

3. Evaluate your role in the Blogger of the Week discussions, in particular please answer the following two questions: What did you do that was effective at contributing to the discussion(s)? Be specific (adding screenshots of your contributing or copying to your blog may be appropriate). What areas do you need improvement in?

I didn’t do too much other than add a string of questions at the end of my post. I didn’t really know any effective ways to get people talking I suppose. I’ve seen throughout many other posts discussions simply going dead because of this issue as well. So in terms of improvement, adding interest? Getting my readers to care about what I’m writing. I feel many other people didn’t regularly post comments because they didn’t care enough to(and there’s nothing wrong with that!).

4. Can you think of a contribution from another student that stood out in your mind that helped move the discussion along or help the class to move to a deeper understanding of the material? What did the student do? (no need to mention names, just describe what the students did or said).

Well out of the grand total of four comments on my BotW, Alex contributed the most. He told me ways I could possibly improve my post while also giving his input. That is to say that the other commentors comments were also equally as appreciated.

5. Do you have any recommendations to the class as a whole to improve class discussions? How are discussions different in an online space versus those held face­to­face? How are they similar?

My recommendation is to not to push students to comment on other people’s posts. For my BotW specifically I added a bunch of optional questions at the end for everyone to answer. I’d much prefer someone simply saying “nice job!” opposed feeling the need to answer all the questions like some assignment or pick apart someone’s post. I feel BotW posts should be enjoyed like any other orignal creation on the internet; you can enjoy it for what it is and can comment/criticize if you feel the need t. I think having a peer editor editing someone’s blog before they post will work better to critically analyse someone’s blog, apposed to having one or two regular commentors doing it for every single BotW post they read. The big difference to from facetoface to the internet is people is the amount of expression involved. If I’m giving typing something to someone it’s hard to express emotions such as genuineness or calmness effectively. Words can be portrayed in a myriad of different ways, which isn’t always a good thing.

6. What are your overall thoughts of the Blogger of the Week assignment? Do you have any suggestions for me moving forward to either: a) improve the assignment; or b) revise the structure, delivery, or scheduling of the assignment itself? Be specific as your opinions will be very helpful for me as I plan for future classes.

My Grade 10 English Reflection(original post?)

I decided to try something new. For this post I’ll be doing an audio recording as my podcast. Just press the button and listen!


So I really did enjoy this year. It was a good experience for me and I had a lot of fun doing it! By the way, this was about my fifth attempt at doing a voice recording so I was extra relaxed? Bored? Had my fill? I was still truthful in the words I said none the less 🙂

P.S. I have no idea why it turned into a video. I’d prefer it just to be the audio minus the big black screen. Help welcomed!

The “Conscious Rice” Experiment

The rice… it’s ALIVE![1]

Didn’t your mother always say not to speak to rice that way? No? Good me neither. But if she did the conscious rice experiment would be the reason why.

And what is the “Conscious Rice” experiment exactly?

With this experiment rice can(apparently) react to your emotions, words, prayers, or any other form of communication/expression.

In short, this experiment involves boiling rice, putting the rice into two separate containers. Then, every day for one month(or so long as you chose) saying “I love you.” to one container of cooked rice and saying “I hate you.” to the other container(or any positive/negative words, music, pictures, you choose).

From there you observe the changes of both of the containers.

Now what should happen is the “negative” container should should become moldy and gross while the “positive” container should remain in perfect condition. We shall see! I’ll be documenting my progress day by day to see if this is for real. Here’s #1!

Day 1:


Apposed to doing daily postings, I’ll simply update this blog when noteworthy changes arise.

This concept was inspired from Masaru Emoto. This guy observed human consciousness(positive/negative stuff) affects how water freezes. You can find out more about Mr. Emoto here.

Introducing Official English Class Badges!

Say hello to some hot-off-the-hard-drive badges for Mr. Puley’s class!

These are what I hope to be badges for completing the grade 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13(victory lap) English curriculum!

I originally wanted to create some badges during the beginning of the year though I had no idea of what to make the badges for(plus my skills on Gimp, a free image editing software were rather rusty).

The the thought behind these were medals, signifying the completion of the course. So, as you go further it’s like getting 3rd, 2nd, 1st place, etc… Improving with each grade!

Shakespeare came into mind simply because his work was such a large focus on our course with the play Romeo and Juliet with the other class’ study on Macbeth Shakespeare was the obvious choice for the design of the medal or badge.

English Thoughts

This image made after our teacher Mr. Puley asked our class “what defines English?” near the beginning of the year. As you can see, along with a few other points Shakespeare dominated the board(bigger words = more votes).   [1]

Compare & Contrast – Romeo and Juliet Balcony Scene


Romeo and Juliet is a play that no one can forget. The original work is regarded as a masterpiece by many and has been performed and seen by thousands over they centuries.  However, since the plays original viewing in 1597[1] there have been many adaptations and re-imaginings of the play. Some of these recreations have been better than others, but all hold true to the plot of Romeo and Juliet.

In this blog I’ll be talking about the similarities and differences between two versions of the play: The 1968 Romeo and Juliet as well as the graphic novel variation from similarities such as mood and overall emotion of the lovers to differences such as intimate things, namely kissing ;).


First off, Romeo’s idolization of Juliet is very prominent in both versions of the play.

Like the original, both versions have Juliet on a balcony during the properly named “balcony” scene. This simple difference in elevation really displays how Romeo literally admires or “looks up to” Juliet. That in combination with his lines when admiring Juliet:

Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon,
Who is already sick and pale with grief,
That thou, her maid, art far more fair than she.
(II. II. 5-8.)
With all these factors, it’s obvious Romeo simply worships Juliet. Again this is portrayed in both versions of the play.


Secondly, both versions hold the same mood and setting.

A dark lit emotional scene with full foliage in the background also accompanied by the castle in which Juliet gazes from. This really sets a deep, emotional setting by focusing on Romeo and Juliet’s romance. This can clearly be seen with the graphic novel’s illustrations as well as the movie. Take a look!

A rather dark and eerie setting adds a lot of depth and seriousness to the graphic novel. [3]

The similar uses of colour between the graphic novel and movie really hold the same feeling through both scenes. [4]


In contrast, the graphic novel has a simply kiss when Romeo and Juliet speak to each other while in the 1968 movie they have a somewhat intimate smooching session.

It’s little details that make a rather big difference. In this instance, the level of intimacy is far more dramatic. While the graphic novel makes the love between the pair obvious, the movie just makes the couple seem like they’re that much more embracing of each other.


In short, both version of the famous play Romeo and Juliet hold many similarities though subtle differences can make big changes to flavour of the play. These changes and continuities are small but they have a large lasting impact on the alterations; it can honestly make of break the quality of the work. So keep a critical eye, who knows there many be a day where you may be a play right yourself, it’s the little details that make all the differences!

Noun Nuking: Turn Conversations into Incoherent Fun!

Noun Nuking

That’s right, it’s time for some noun nuking. A little activity where you craft ordinary talking into a babbling mess!

It’s quite easy to do, simply make an ordinary conversation and replace all the nouns with any word of your choice and paste it below! Take this for an example.


Jeremy: Hey Mr. Puley! How are you today?

Mr. Puley: Hey Jeremy! I’m doing fine.

Jeremy: Did you happen to do anything interesting this weekend?

It’s Time to Visualize! #1 – Ezio’s Family



Indeed! It is time to get your imagination working!

The goal of this is to relax your mind and also expand your creative thinking!

Instructions are simple: Turn on your audio(headphones preferably but not necessary) and relax. Then focus(eyes closed, or not) on the music provided and begin to visualize a story or scene from the music playing. Easy!

After your finished listening, you can read my visualization of the song below the video. Comment below your visualization  from the song, I’d love to read(and imagine) what you came up with! If you don’t want to type too much you can always comment the first word that came to mind with the song, either or!

So what did you imagine? Could you feel the power of the song? I certainly could.

To sum up, this song definitely felt like a journey. Set in a place similar to that of the movie “Tales From Earthsea” if you’re familiar(Haven’t heard of it? Here’s an image to interpret). This really made me visualize “the creation of a legend” or something of that sort. Like I said before, there’s a lot of power building throughout. Near the ending parts of the performance I can really picture some sort of epic fight on the grandest scale. And as you could imagine, the legend of this tale is victorious(without breaking a sweat). After this “climax” I imagine this hero to continue journeying along further with the most picturesque scenes in the background  and most dramatic of camera angles. Just like a movie trailer!

I tried to be as vivid as possible when describing what I envisioned, I realized over-describing can really butcher the emotion of the song.
